In One Yard: Close to Nature Book 2
In One Yard: Close to Nature Book 2 (2020) includes more than 750 high quality color photographs (all except two taken by the author) of living organisms in the author’s 1/6 acre (.07 hectare) urban yard in Portland, Oregon, recorded over a 9+ year period (2010-2020). This 215-page, hardbound book includes sections on pollinating insects (bees, flies, and wasps), aquatic organisms (including frogs, dragonfly and damselfly larvae and adults, daphnids, worms, green algae, cyanobacteria, protists, and tardigrades), flowers, fungi, lichens, mosses and liverworts, pseudoscorpions, mites, harvestmen, and spiders. It also includes a stunning 2-page display of photographs through a microscope of 40 different varieties of seeds all on a black background. The book includes five photographs of various techniques used to acquire these images, including a setup used to photograph green algae through a microscope. Scientific names, when known, are used throughout the book. Many generous scientists, including Dr. Bruce McCune and Eric R. Eaton, assisted in identifying organisms. The book includes an annotated bibliography of 87 outstanding books, and a 4-page index containing more than 400 index entries.

Excerpts from book review: Sally Peterson. “‘In One Yard: Close to Nature Book 2′ will excite an outdoor Oregon adventure”. The Oregonian. August 31, 2022.
“‘In One Yard: Close to Nature Book 2’ is valuable to anyone interested in biology, ecology and nature. Hatch has achieved his stated goal for writing this impressive guide: “to encourage you to look more closely at small organisms in your environment”.
“Personally, I will never look at my property again without a deeper appreciation and understanding of the diverse ecosystem it represents.
“Numerous photos of lichens, mosses and fungi, including photos through a microscope, are accompanied by brief explanations of their importance in the environment and soil.
“A myriad of photos of endearing spiders, harvestmen (“daddy longlegs”), mites and pseudoscorpions will hopefully help more gardeners learn to appreciate, rather than fear, these fascinating, and in many ways beneficial, organisms.”
